Huntington Beach Surfing Associations

The Boys of 55 were the club after the Keoke Surf Club of George Stremple and others at the Hb pier.

Huntington Beach Surfing Assn was started by Max Klepfer and several area surfers in 1962. The meetings were held at Max's shop in Sunset Beach. Max was the president.

The Huntington Beach Surfing Club was established in 1963. The City of Huntington Beach and the Lifeguards formed this club.

Both the Huntington Beach Surfing Association and the Huntington Beach Surfing Club faded away by the 1970's as most surfers were anti-establishment and became "soul surfers". As the shortboard gained popularity the competitive aspect of surfing faded during the 1970's. The surf clubs died and became loosly run teams such as the "Hole in the Wall Gang". The "gang" would compete against neighboring towns for "bragging rights". They won just about every event that happened during the 1970's.

The next club to emerge in HB was the Huntington Beach Longboard Crew, HBLC. In 1980, a convergence of classical surfboards aka longboards on the northside of the HB pier enabled the locals boys to take over. By 1985, this new club organized and started holding events. The Annual San O Smash at San Onofre and the Annual Longboard Contest at the pier were signature events for HBLC. The club became part of the Coalition of Surf Clubs. The HBLC aka HB Surf Club continues today! The club has the HB Surf Team which travels to compete with other teams up and down the California coast.
